Antique iron axe heads on blackened steel stand. American, circa 19th Century. Often axe heads were made in small rural blacksmith shops and where furs were traded in exchange for fur pelts with Native Americans. The older hand-wrought axe head often bear marks of the small shop and were made for specific purposes such as felling trees, surfacing logs for building and fencing, or chopping fire wood. These axe heads represent a part of American history of westward expansion and settlement.
