Paying homage to Japanese woodblock prints of waves popular in the 1800s, THE FORMER EMPEROR tells the story of a ruler fleeing into the night followed by a flotilla of small wooden boats, all of which traverse a powerfully rough ocean guided only by glowing red paper lanterns. Designed in traditional woodblock print style, each wave, crest and swell are classically simplistic, with the frothy foam sharply picked out in bright white and the water becoming linear blue curves, with details highlighted in gleaming metallics.
