Charlie Davis at Meadow Stables Barn
Meet Charlie Davis, Secretariat's exercise rider from the time the horse was two years old until his last race. Charlie describes his relationship with Big Red as 'two peas in a pod' and 'we were good, good friends'. Pictured here outside Meadow Stables barn at Belmont, shortly before Secretariat became the Triple Crown winner. Charlie has just finished working out for the day and is probably going to cool down the champion with those buckets of water. The rider knew the mount so well that as he watched the Belmont Stakes from the backside of the track, he told the his friends that Secretariat had won the race as soon as he saw his incredible start from the gates, and he was right as we all now know. It takes an incredible horse with an incredible team to make history like they did, Charlie was a huge part of that success and we were thrilled to find this enduring photo of him.
