I combed through a number of current and historical maps and reflected on many of my own visits to the islands while working on this project. Having been fortunate enough to call Fidalgo Island (also known as "the gateway to the San Juans") home for over a decade, I've done a lot of in-person research of the islands over the years, hiking, paddling, biking, boating, and exploring on and around the San Juan Islands.  To create this artwork, I used maps to pencil out the coast lines of the islands, and then I marked out
