Shot on 35-millimeter film in 1970 and 1971, these black and white images beautifully capture the universal joys of summer and the unique character of pristine Block Island. - Gemming (1928-2004) was a German immigrant who began his career in book design. Shortly after his arrival in Manhattan in 1956, he met his wife Elizabeth, a native New Yorker and Wellesley graduate, with whom he had two daughters. Beginning in the late 1960’s, the family began vacationing on Block Island, then a relatively remote destination, located approximately 9 miles from the coast of mainland Rhode Island. The Gemmings were enchanted with the island’s unspoiled landscape– its pristine beaches, Victorian architecture, and storied lighthouses– as well as its simple pleasures: lemonade stands, beach walks, and bike rides.
