Colares is the smallest wine appellation in the world and Ramilo is one of about four people making it, the only one who is organic. The vines are basically planted on the beach on the Atlantic coast, they have to dig ten feet deep into the sand to reach soild earth for the vines, and each vine is surrounded by craters of sand to protect them from the harsh winds. This makes for some of the most singular and amazing wines in the world, not to mention rare. Sea brine and iron notes with dried floweral aromas. Beefy but integrated tannin and high-toned acid. Hauntingly complex. Jonathan Kemp
