Domaine Jean Foillard Fleurie 2022
In 2018, the Foillards purchased a three-hectare parcel in Fleury - just north of Morgon. The plantings are in exceptionally good company, with parcels adjacent to Jean-Louis Dutraive's holdings in a vineyard site called “Champagne” and Jean Paul Brun’s “Grille Midi”. The old vines grow on pink sandstone and granitic sands, yielding fruit with energy and depth. In the Foillard's hands, grapes are vatted whole and without destemming in order to ferment in the traditional carbonic maceration. Low temperature fermentations last for about 3 or 4 weeks, followed by 6 to 9 months in neutral barrels. The Fleurie is Foillard's most elusive bottling for sure, and it’s always such a treat to have it around. Historically, this wine always shows this lovely tension between freshness and structure, with spiced blue/red fruit and a earthy/floral/potpourri-like undertone. It is firm and lively on the palate: delicious, yet promising for those with more patience than I. Bruno Sant'Anna
