DESCRIPTION Introduction to Raku Firing This hands-on workshop introduces students to Raku: an ancient Japanese alternative firing technique which involves removing pieces from a kiln while still hot and placing them in combustible materials to starve the piece of oxygen. This interactive and communal process creates one of a kind, decorative ceramic art. Participants should make and bring 2 ceramic pieces that have been bisque fired. Only Raku clay and Raku glaze should be used to make pieces. Items that are Raku fired are not food safe so please keep this in mind when deciding what to bring for firing.  This will be a 4 hour hands-on, communal firing where students will try different methods to introduce color, carbon, and imprinting into their pieces. At the end, participants are invited to stay around for a friendly group critique and clean up. What to bring/wear: Non-polyester clothing such as denim and cotton.
