The Black Ruby Barb (Pethia nigrofasciata) is a hardy species of aquarium fish for a planted or community aquarium. Although endemic to the high-altitude streams of Sri Lanka, SA’s Black Ruby Barbs are bred in captivity. Sustainable Aquatics recommends SA’s Hatchery Diet as a food for this omnivorous species. The Black Ruby Barb can grow to a maximum length of about 2.5 inches (6.4cm), with females growing slightly larger than males. Sand or gravel substrates, an aquarium with ample swimming space, and water of about 72-79F (22-26C) and of slightly acidic pH (6-6.5) are ideal aquarium conditions for the Black Ruby Barb.
