History Egyptian Swallow Block sculpture Wall plaque carving www.Neo-Mfg.com In this small relief from Ptolemaic times there are several animals, as they were often depicted as hieroglyphic signs: on one side there are two swallows, on the other an owl looking at the viewer and a lurking vulture. So the swallow stood for the sound "wr", the owl for the letter M and the vulture for the throat sound "aleph".
