Thomas Cole (American) 1832 Born in England, Cole embarked on two extended journeys to Europe, during which he sought to capture the beauty of the landscapes that rivaled his American vistas. Among the European destinations, it was the Italian landscape that particularly fascinated him, prompting him to incorporate the artistic traditions of renowned European masters like Claude Lorrain into his works. In the spring of 1832, Cole sketched the Roman Campagna, but it wasn't until his return to Florence in June that he painted this particular canvas. In a letter written in 1834, he described the artwork as follows: "A view near Tivoli, featuring a bridge and a section of an ancient aqueduct known as 'Il Arco di Nerone.'
