Henri Rousseau - le Douanier (French) ca. 1908–09 According to a handwritten note by Rousseau himself, dated 1909, the subject of this painting is the landscape around Bicêtre, a working-class neighborhood on the southern outskirts of Paris near the Bièvre river. During Rousseau's time, the river was heavily polluted, but there were still some picturesque areas, as depicted in the painting. The figures dressed in peasant attire walking along the tree-lined path and the distant view of the seventeenth-century aqueduc d'Arcueil contribute to the overall scene. Rousseau consigned the painting for sale to the dealer Ambroise Vollard in the same year. Make a statement in any room with this framed poster, printed on thick matte paper.
