Henri-Edmond Cross - Henri-Edmond Delacroix (French) 1909 Henri-Edmond Cross was a practitioner of Neoimpressionism, an avant-garde movement in the late 19th century. This style emphasized the use of separate touches of interwoven pigment to create vibrant colors in the viewer's eye. In this landscape painting, Cross employed a palette of contrasting hues and a technique inspired by Georges Seurat. He used layered strokes of paint with varying density, intentionally leaving areas of primed ground exposed in the foreground and on the left side of the composition. The result is a playful variation in brushwork that enhances the decorative quality of the painting and draws attention to the flat, patterned designs created by the strokes of color.
