The mullein wildflower is an herbaceous biennial in the scrophulariaceae plant family. It grows wild throughout the United States, however, it was originally imported from Europe. Surprisingly, mullein thrives in sandy soils, dry gravel and areas where fire once disturbed the soil. The seeds can lie dormant in the ground for decades, and one study even found they may lie dormant for up to one hundred years! The mullein plant can grow quite tall with the center stalk reaching six feet or higher. The leaves are large, up to twenty inches long, and are covered with a fuzzy layer of fine hairs which has resulted in alternative names for this plant such as velvet leaf, flannel flower, woolen blanket & grandmother's flannel. Mullein has been sought after for
