Iwo Jima 80th Commemorative Set

Surviving U.S. Marines and Japanese Army veterans who fought in this battle will come together for a reunion on the island. This event symbolizes reconciliation and peace between those who were once bitter enemies but have become brothers united by respect and the shared bond of war. In 1945, the Japanese-fortified island, approximately eight square miles in size, characterized by harsh volcanic ash and rock, was strategically located halfway between Japan and the American B-29 airfields of Saipan, Tinian, and Guam. Japanese fighters operated from Iwo Jima to harass the B-29 bombers en-route to Japan. Capturing the island was essential not only to prevent these attacks but also to provide a sanctuary for U.S. bombers returning from Japan that were damaged in action.
