Namakubi 生首 - "freshly-severed head" is a grotesque and brutal Japanese motif meant to frighten and shock onlookers. It first appeared in ukiyo-e (woodblock prints) from the Edo period (1603-1868) and is still found in traditional Japanese irezumi (tattoos) today.Depicted is a Samurai warrior vanquishing an Akuma (evil spirit) by severing his head. The implied concept of Rinne-Tensho (reincarnation) illustrates how life comes full circle.
