Aquarium water mixed with CO2 is pumped through the reactor. The CO2 creates carbonic acid that lowers the pH in the reactor which then dissolves the crushed coral into the aquarium water. In addition to dissolving the calcium, this process also creates almost all of the minerals and trace elements that the coral uses to grow.
