The Omega Speedmaster Professional is a watch that's indelibly linked to the Space Program, in particular the Apollo program. In 1967, the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Soviet Union signed the Outer Space Treaty. The Treaty set the guidelines of international space law--in particular, it banned the use of nuclear weapons in space. To date, over 104 nations have signed and ratified the treaty, keeping the solemn promise laid down in the National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958 that "all activities in space should be devoted to peaceful purposes for the benefit of all mankind." The year also marked achievements for NASA that would lay the groundwork for the Apollo missions. Having already achieved a spacewalk in 1965 (undertaken by astronaut Edward White, whose own tragic history is linked to the Speedmaster), NASA turned its attention to determining suitable landing sites on the Moon.
