Adrien de Montigny (French, C1570-1615)Ferace at Mesnil-ÉgliseThis hamlet has completely changed since the time that Adrien de Montigny drew this view. The village is pictured nestled in greenery -- small woods, cherry and apple orchards -- while at left, the church is half-hidden by bushes. One can glimpse two sides of a square tower surmounted by a tall bell tower capped by a cross. The houses of pink-ochre color are capped by very steep thatched roofs, typical of the region, that give them a massive appearance. Beyond the village, fields and meadows extend, divided into large parcels by lines of trees, up to the easy slope of the hilltop. In the foreground, the painter represented a hunting scene.Cartouche: Le Villaige de ferriagesWatercolor and gouache on vellum1596 - 1598Vellum size: 20 ½ x 15 ¼ in.  Frame size: 26 x 21 in.   SHOWING RENAISSANCE ESTATES AND NATURAL HISTORY SUBJECTS BY ADRIEN DE MONTIGNY (c1570-1615)ORIGINALLY FROM THE COLLECTION OF CHARLES DE CROŸ,FOURTH DUKE OF A
