Choice Almost Uncirculated Roman Empire silver denarius coin struck for Emperor Antoninus Pius (father of Marcus Aurelius). Minted at Rome, 3.41g, approx 17mm, RIC 231v (not draped), RSC 291a. Dated issue (TR POT XVII = 153/4 CE). Well struck with heavy flan, 3.41g. Rare draped bust style (not in RIC) with superb portrait. Lightly toned with luster. NGC Certified to Ch AU, Strike 4/5, Surface 4/5. Obverse: ANTONINVS AVG PIVS PP TR P XVII, laureate bust of emperor. Reverse: COS IIII, Annona standing left, holding grain and resting left hand on modius filled with grain set on prow of ship. Annona (Latin annōna “corn, grain; means of subsistence”, from annus "year") is the divine personification of the grain supply to the city of Rome.
