It is treasured for its remarkable play of color (labradorescence), which shows vivid flashes of green, blue, gold, orange, red, and sometimes violet. It is from Canada, Madagascar, and the US. It has a hardness score of 6-6.5. Legend has it that the Northern Lights were once stuck inside rocks on the Canadian coast until a brave warrior freed most of them by hitting the rocks with a spear. Inuits once called labradorite a "fire stone" and would use powdered forms to help cure ailments.
