Material: ABS 1.Background: In 1936, Junkers engineer Dr. Johannes Gasterstädt designed an opposed-piston engine configuration that could achieve 2,000 horsepower (1,490 kilowatts) in a compact package suitable for aircraft use. The configuration consists of four cylinder banks at 90-degree angles to each other, so they form a rhombus - a square balanced at one point (◇). The pistons of two neighboring cylinder banks are connected to a crankshaft located at each corner of the rhombus. Each cylinder bank has six cylinders. A complete engine has four crankshafts, 24 cylinders, and 48 pistons. The engine study of the Junkers lozenge configuration was named the P2000. Dr. Gasterstädt died in 1937, and Professor Otto Mader and Manfred Gerlach took over the P2000 project. By the end of 1937, a single-cylinder test engine and a complete six-cylinder block had been built and operated, and in April 1938, the RLM (German Ministry of Aeronautics) renamed the P2000 engine the Jumo 223.
