This listing is for the Original 16th C. Hendrick Goltzius Portrait of Johannes Zurenus Engraving pictured above.About this work:This original 16th century portrait engraving is by one of the great Dutch Old Master artists, Hendrick Goltzius (1558-1617). Executed in impeccable detail, the sitter in this image, Johannes Zurenus (1517-1591), was a printer, publisher, and mayor of Haarlem in the Netherlands.Goltzius was regarded as the leading Dutch engraver of the early Baroque period, and this specific image is the last known portrait he produced before shifting his attention to painting later in life.Given the artist's reputation, he has been widely collected throughout history. This particular example was previously owned by a famous banker and print collector, William Esdaile (1758-1837), who signed his initials in the lower right quadrant of the engraving. This example is also a "third state" example, meaning it is the third and last version of the engraving to be produced. Earlier
