Then I learned what happened there many years ago... Nestled along Highway 17 between Beaufort and Charleston, this is the place where Harriet Tubman led over 700 enslaved people to freedom during the largest raid to take place in the Civil War. She orchestrated an extremely complicated and heroic effort to bring men, women and children of the surrounding plantations to their new lives as freed individuals. Harriet Tubman is best known for the Underground Railroad, but in my opinion, the Combahee River Raid of 1863 rivals that accomplishment. Harriet Tubman was prominent in Beaufort, and you can truly feel the spirit and energy in this humbling place. When driving through, the marsh stretches out in front of you, unhindered and seemingly endless. The paths along the marsh are perfectly perpendicular, signifyin
