In this 4-week workshop we will make our own paste papers and build one flat-back case binding together. We will also start and get as far as we can in a second identical binding which students will finish at home.  Skills that students will learn include: paste papers, tearing down paper and building signatures, sewing on tapes, handmade headbands using cloth or paper, building a case with a cloth spine (measuring text block, and cutting board and cloth and paper), and casing in book. Each student will leave with one complete book and the materials for a second book as well as a big stack of beautiful paste papers to use for future bookbinding projects. This is a course that is designed for those who are more serious about learning the nuts and bolts of the craft of hand bookbinding. There will also be special attention drawn to ways of accomplishing professional results at home with inexpensive tools.
