Olivine sand is a refractory material which has a low silica content. It is a orthosilicate mineral found in nature with the chemical name "magnesium iron silicate". Wikipedia describes the varieties of olivine as the proportion of magnesium to iron varies. The natural mineral forsterite (magnesium orthosilicate) is at the magnesium end and the natural mineral fayalite (iron chrysolite) is at the iron end. Together they are the end members of the olivine solid solution series. Olivine is in a sense the combination of the two in differing proportions.
