These are tourmaline crystals in larger chunks than our other tourmaline (around 10 mm to 30 mm). It has a mohs hardness of 7.5. Tourmaline is a birthstone for October. It is found in all colors. Black tourmaline is "Schorl", named after a German village where it was mined in the 15th century. Like quartz, tourmaline is "piezoelectric" and additionally is "pyroelectric". it will generate an electrical field around it when heated, which like piezoelectricity, is caused by heat deforming its crystal molecular structure.
