Here is one of the wonderful but little known East Coast US native penstemons. This dwarf version of P. hirsutus makes a delightful mound to 15" wide of strap-like foliage. In summer, the flowering stalks extend upward, ending in hundreds of tiny bell-like flowers, each with light purple petals with white tips. Native from Wisconsin to Virginia and north to Maine, you can find P. hirsutus var. hirsutus in both woodlands and open fields...what a versatile and durable plant!
