A Seated Mayan Jade Figure, Classic Period, ca. 600 - 1400 CE

Carved from mottled sage-green jade, the seated shaman figure sitting cross-legged on a low plinth with his hands clasped at his chest, his large head with heavy jowels, wide nose, slashed mouth, and large ears, his cheeks, eyebrows, and forehead lacerated with symbols. Dimensions: Height: 1 1/2 inches (3.8 cm) Condition: Intact and in excellent condition overall. Provenance: Ex. Ian Arundel Collection, Los Angeles, thereafter private Canadian collection, acquired from Malter Galleries in 2008.
