late nineteenth century63" x 13 3/4", 160 cm x 35 cm This is a really wonderful length of handwoven cotton cloth which was once part of a futon cover. It shows very traditional Japanese motifs which are rendered in the kasuri method: the "hashtag" designs are called well cover and the stepped, chevron-like designs are arrow feather. The vertically-oriented groups of gradient stripes are meant to suggest a waterfall. This length is in good, used condition. Beautiful in color and in execution, this is a wonderful length of cotton from old Japan.
