Napoléon Daru was the Minister of Foreign Affairs in 1870 under Émile Ollivier's cabinet. Daru was born in Paris in 1807 and was the godson of Napoleon and Joséphine. He served in the French military, participating in the conquest of Algeria. He was also a member of the National Constituent Assembly, the National Legislative Assembly, and the Corps législatif.
