Loose Talk Can Cost Lives - Sinking Ship

During the Second World War, there was a constant concern in the United States about inappropriate information being overheard by enemy agents both domestically and abroad. During 1942, a specific group of posters based on the title Loose Talk Can Cost Lives was launched. This is one of the images from that campaign, in this case showing the sinking ship and the sailors in lifeboats as a result of careless talk. Stevan Dohanos was a successful commercial artist active in the mid-20th Century. He attended the Cleveland School of Art and admired artists like Grant Wood and Edward Hopper. He illustrated over 125 covers for the Saturday Evening Post. In the 1960s he served as chairman of the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee. His paintings and prints have been highlights in many national museums and art institutions including the Cleveland Museum of Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and Dartmouth College.
