La Miraja, Freisa D'Asti (2023)
Piedmont, Italy. 100% Freisa. Organic farming. Hand-harvested fruit is destemmed and then crushed by basket press into stainless-steel tanks, where it remains in contact with the skins for 10 days while native fermentation occurs. Following spontaneous malolactic fermentation, the wine rests in tank for 3 months and then an additional 4 months in bottle prior to release. Bright and zippy, this Freisa is bursting with wild strawberries, tart cherries, and a touch of forest spice. Juicy raspberry and earthy notes keep things interesting, while a hint of white pepper adds a little kick. With its crisp acidity, floral charm, and stony minerality, it’s the perfect chillable red for warm-weather sipping—rustic yet refined in all the right ways! La Miraja (pronounced “me-rye-uh”) is tiny by any measure, comprising less than 4 hectares under vine. It is here that Eugenio devotes his life’s work to producing roughly 2,500 transcendent cases of wine each year.
