Domaine Jean Foillard "Cote du Py" Morgon 2022
Foillard’s Cote de Py is always a special wine. To me, it was one of the first wines that busted the “Beaujolais is a simple wine” myth, and proof that a cru Beaujolais belongs at the same table as [enter expensive burgundy name here], whilst relatively affordable and available.Cote du Py is one of the famous hillsides in Morgon, with vines growing on decomposed schist. The best wines from here — including this one — show mouthwatering mineral energy with clarity and vibrancy. Light in spirit, but textural and complex all the same.I’ve always aspired to start a fun collection centered on wines I like to drink - Beaujolais, Rieslings etc… but I might have underestimated how much I like to drink them! Trouble is, these wines are so good when they land, it’s hard to keep the corkscrew at a distance. I have succeeded at “forgetting” a few Folliard Cote du Py, and I can say with confidence that it is a wine that is as compelling to drink now as it is then. Bruno Sant'Anna
