Small deciduous tree that is great for naturalizing! Early spring flowers range from creamy yellow to reddish as large, opening as the blue-green pinnate leaves emerge. Flowers provide nectar for hummingbirds. Mature height and width is 6-12'. Painted buckeye is an understory tree that grows best in well-drained soil. Its native habitat is stream edges in the piedmont and lower elevations of the mountains in the Southeastern US. Hardy in zones 6-9.
