A showstopper for shady areas! Red buckeye (Aesculus pavia) brightens up shady areas with panicles of bright red flowers up to 10" long. The bold, tropical-looking leaves are shiny and are one of the first leaves to emerge in the spring. Flowers attract hummingbirds and emerge as the birds migrate back to the area in the spring. This small tree/large shrub reaches 10-20' tall and wide at maturity. Native to the Southeastern US. Provide shade and ample soil moisture to avoid leaf scorch. Slow growing but worth the wait! Hardy in zones 4-8. Deer resistant.
