(Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana:5313) Second edition. The San Sebastian Tournaments of 1911 and 1912 were remarkable for two reasons, of which are virtually forgotten today. Organized and run by Mieses, it was the first at which all competitors were reimbursed for their fares and living expenses; it thus constituted an enormous advance in the development of chess as a profession. Secondly, it was one of the few non-FIDE events for which a special qualification was demanded. Only those master were invited who had won at least two fourth prizes. But with the number of competitors coming to a smaller total than twelve it was decided to hold it as a double round event. Of the eleven who played, nine had also played in 1911. Only two players, Dr Perlis, who was to die tragically and premat
